A visit to gay Rio is never complete without a detour to the Farme de Amoedo – Rio’s very own gay beach.
Located on Ipanema beach, Farme de Amoedo is an area situated near the Rua of the same name, and is known for being the gay-friendly street area and beach, designated with many rainbow flags floating in the air. As you walk from and to the beach through Farme de Amoedo Street, you will find a gay friendly atmosphere, including some cafés, restaurants and bars. At the time of this writing, “To Nem Ai” and “Cafeina” are two of the favorites hotspots, by both gay locals and tourists.
This Farme beach is regarded as “Barbie Land” as it is frequented by the muscular gay men taking a “catwalk” on the sand. The overall atmosphere is friendly with both gay and lesbian couples displaying affection openly. Party promoters are often seen distributing flyers with discounts to gay clubs and parties, and there are even massage boards, hair dressers on hand to get you looking fierce before the night begins. Do not worry if you forgot the “sunga” at home or need a new one. One will find plenty of beach sellers offering the last models at very convenient prices.
Have you ever used a Brazilian sunga?

There really isn’t an alternative. But the flight from JFK is 10.5 hrs and by now this place has the idea that they can charge the same prices as europe. The olympics have everyone in a frenzy that this is free money. And now hotel Gloria is being renovated to be THE hotel of south America. Have you seen the place. I was forced to stay due to an overbooked flight and it’s in the middle of town and real grundgy. My next trip here can wait til after the olympics when they return to reality.
