The prize is awarded by Logo, the MTV channel geared towards the GLBT community. The city is competing with Barcelona, Buenos Aires, London, Montreal and Sydney.

The campaign is managed by a gay website TripOut Gay Travel, part of the MTV network. The committee that selected Rio for the award is formed by GLBT professionals composed of journalists, developers, publishers and travel agents.

- It’s important to recognize the growth of the gay tourism in the world. Rio has all the characteristics to be known as a “gay friendly” city. It is a commitment to diversity that brings much revenue to the city, both in taxes as well as new jobs – Paulo Senise, a managing director at the Rio Convention & Visitors Bureau.

In addition to Global Best Gay Destination, the prize also includes nine other categories in the LGBT segment, Among them, an annual event or festival, bar, hotel chain, tour operator, hotel or luxury resort and airline.

Voting has begun and runs through September 28. To choose Rio de Janeiro as the best gay destination in the world, just go to the site www.tripoutgaytravel.com/awards. The winner will be announced on November 2, during the CMI 10th Conference of Gay and Lesbian Travel in Boston.
